Template library
Start posts from ready-made layouts, and build and manage your own reusable templates.
What templates are
A template is a reusable starting point for a post: a title, subtitle, thumbnail and content. Using one creates a new draft with all of that copied in, ready to change. The template itself stays as it was.
There are two kinds:
- Quick start templates: ready-made layouts that come with Inkwave.
- Your templates: ones you or your team made or saved.
Starting a post from a template
The quickest way is Start Writing on the Newsletters page. See the Writing a newsletter guide.
You can also open the Newsletter template library page. It has two tabs: Start Writing and My Templates.
Start Writing
- Recently used: some of your own templates, plus Blank Draft, which creates a new, empty template (not a post) and opens it for editing. To start a post from scratch, use Start Writing on the Newsletters page.
- Quick start templates: the ready-made layouts.
Each quick start template's menu has:
- Use template: creates a draft from it and opens the editor.
- Edit quick start template: makes your own copy, which you can change and reuse. The original is left alone.
My Templates
All of your publication's templates. Blank Draft creates a new, empty template and opens it for editing.
Each template's menu has:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Use template | Creates a draft from it and opens the editor. |
| Edit template | Opens it to change its content. |
| Preview | Shows how it looks, and its details. |
| Duplicate template | Makes a copy named with "(Copy)" at the end. |
| Delete template | Deletes it for good, after you confirm. |
Editing a template
The template editor has two tabs, Write and Details. Click Exit to go back to the library.
Write works like the post editor. You can set the thumbnail, title and subtitle, and write the content. Changes save on their own, and the badge shows Synced, Syncing or Error. You have Undo, Redo and Find & Replace.
Polls, recommendations and referral blocks can't be added in the template editor. Add them to the post after you use the template.
Details shows a preview and the Template name, which your team sees when picking a template. The name is required and saves as you type.
Saving a post as a template
You can turn any post into a template:
- in the editor, click Save as template in the toolbar
- or, in your Newsletters list, choose Save as template from a post's menu
Give it a name and click Save Template. It copies the post's title, subtitle, thumbnail and content. Audience, email and web settings aren't part of a template.
Troubleshooting
"You haven't saved any templates yet.": create one with Blank Draft, or save a post as a template.
"Template name is required": give the template a name on the Details tab.
My changes to a template didn't change my posts: templates are only copied when you use them. Posts already made from a template don't change.
Save as template isn't in a post's menu: your role doesn't let you create templates from the list.
