Inkwave Help

General settings

Set your publication's name, logo, language and timezone, decide who can read and join it, and control the tracking tags added to your email links.

Where to find it

Go to Settings, General Info. Only the owner and admins can open it.

There is no Save button on this page. Every change saves on its own a moment after you make it. Each section shows its progress in the top corner: Syncing while it saves, Synced once it is done, and Error if it didn't save.

The page has three sections: General Info, Content Access and UTM Analytics.

General Info

SettingWhat it does
Publication NameYour publication's name. It can't be empty.
Publication One-Line DescriptionA short line about your publication.
Publication LogoYour logo. It is also used as your website's browser tab icon. 800 x 800 px works best.
Default Thumbnail PreviewThe image shown on your publication's card when another publication recommends yours. 1200 x 630 px works best.
Publication TagsUp to 3 tags that describe what your publication is about.
Default LanguageThe language of your website: Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Italiano or Português.
Default TimezoneThe timezone your publication works in (see below).
Subscribe Button TextThe words on your website's subscribe button, such as "Join free". Leave it empty to use the default.

To change the logo or thumbnail, click the image and choose a new file. Only image files are accepted. Click the small cross on the image to remove it.

Why the timezone matters

The Default Timezone is used:

  • when you schedule a post, so "9:00 AM" means 9:00 in your publication's timezone, for everyone on your team
  • for the days in your analytics charts, so a day runs from your local midnight to midnight

If you have never chosen a timezone, the field shows your browser's timezone, but that is only a suggestion and is not saved. Until you pick one, Inkwave uses UTC. Open Default Timezone and choose your timezone from the list, even if the right one is already showing, and wait for Synced.

Content Access

Private Publication

Turn this on to make your publication members-only:

  • Only readers who already have access can read your content.
  • Your website's subscribe page and subscribe forms, including forms you have embedded on other sites, no longer let anyone sign up. They show a message instead.
  • New visitors can't join, unless you also turn on Require Subscriber Approval.

This suits internal newsletters, private clubs and similar groups. Your existing subscribers keep their access.

Require Subscriber Approval

Only available while Private Publication is on. Instead of turning new visitors away, it lets them ask to join:

  • A visitor signs in with their email address and their request waits for you.
  • You get an Access requests notification. This one can't be switched off.
  • Approve or deny each request from the Subscribers page.

If you turn Private Publication off, this switch shows as off and can't be changed. Your earlier choice comes back when you make the publication private again.

Private Branding

Removes the Inkwave badge from the footer of your emails. It doesn't change your website.

This is only offered on plans that include it. If your plan doesn't, the switch is greyed out and says which plans include it. If you turned it on and later move to a plan without it, the badge comes back on your emails, and your choice is used again when you upgrade.

UTM Analytics

UTM tags are small additions to a link that tell your analytics tool where a visit came from. With Automatic UTM Tagging turned on, Inkwave adds them to the links in your newsletters and automation emails.

SettingUsed forIf you leave it empty
UTM Sourceutm_sourceYour publication's website address.
UTM Mediumutm_medium"newsletter".
UTM Campaignutm_campaignFor a newsletter, the last part of the post's web address. For an automation email, an identifier for the automation.

A few things to know:

  • Links that already have any UTM tag are left exactly as they are, so you can tag a link by hand when you want something different.
  • Your three values only take effect while Automatic UTM Tagging is on.
  • The change applies to emails sent after you make it, not to emails already sent.

Troubleshooting

A section shows Error: your last change didn't save. Check your connection, then change the field again or refresh the page.

My publication name went back to the old one: the name can't be empty. If you clear the field, nothing is saved until you type a new name.

Readers can't subscribe: check whether Private Publication is on. While it is, nobody can sign up unless Require Subscriber Approval is also on, and then you have to approve them.

Private Branding is greyed out: your plan doesn't include it. See Settings, Billing & Plan.

I can't add another tag: you can pick up to 3. Remove one by clicking its cross, then choose another.

Scheduled times look an hour or more off: check Default Timezone. Times are shown and scheduled in the publication's timezone, not your computer's. If you never picked one from the list, your publication is still on UTC even though the field shows your own timezone. Choose it from the list to save it.
