Content tags

Organise your posts by topic with tags, add them to posts, and see which topics your readers engage with most.

What content tags are

Content tags file your posts under topics, such as "Design" or "Interviews". A post can have several tags. Tags help you:

  • see which topics perform best, in your reports
  • show a post's topics on your website, and let readers browse posts by topic

Where to find them

Go to Newsletters, click Reports, then Content tags. The tab has the tag report and, below it, Manage tags.

Manage tags only shows if your role can manage tags. Others can still read the report.

Creating and editing tags

In Manage tags, click New tag:

  • Name: what readers and your team see.
  • Slug: the tag's name in web addresses. It's filled in from the name. It can only use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, can't start or end with a hyphen, and must not be used by another tag. A tick or warning shows whether it's free.
  • Description: optional, what the tag is about.

Click Save.

To change or remove a tag, use the menu beside it and pick Edit or Delete. Changing a tag's slug changes its web address, so links to the old one may stop working.

Deleting a tag takes it off every post it was on, including published ones, and removes it from the tag picker and the report. It can't be undone.

Adding tags to posts

On one post: in the editor, click Add Content Tags under the thumbnail. Search, then tick or untick tags. Changes are saved straight away.

On several posts at once:

  1. On Newsletters, click Posts.
  2. Tick the posts you want.
  3. Click Bulk actions and choose Add and remove tags.
  4. Pick one or more tags and click Add tags.

This adds tags but doesn't remove any. To take a tag off a post, untick it in that post's editor.

The post's page lists its tags under Content Tags on the Overview tab.

The report

The Content tags report shows how issues with each tag performed in the date range you pick:

ColumnWhat it shows
TagThe tag.
IssuesHow many issues with this tag were sent.
DeliveredEmails delivered for those issues.
Open rateUnique opens out of delivered.
vs avgThe tag's open rate minus your publication's average open rate for the same range, in percentage points. Green is above average, red below.
CTRClick-through rate.
CTORClick-to-open rate: how many openers clicked.

An issue counts toward every tag it carries, so the rows overlap. Don't add them up to get a total.

Troubleshooting

I can't see Manage tags: your role can read the report but not manage tags. Ask someone on your team who can.

"No tagged issues were sent in this range.": none of the issues sent in that range had tags. Try a longer range, or add tags to your posts.

Save is greyed out: the slug is taken or isn't in the right format. Change it.

Add and remove tags didn't remove a tag: it only adds. Remove tags from each post in the editor.
