Inkwave Help

Content import

Bring your past posts over from another newsletter platform, so your archive lives in Inkwave without anything being sent again.

What content import does

Content import copies the posts you have already written on another platform into this publication. Each post arrives as an imported post: it is saved, but it is never emailed to your subscribers.

You find it under Settings, Content Import. Right now you can import from Beehiiv. Substack, Mailchimp, WordPress and Ghost are shown as Coming soon.

This copies posts only. To bring over your subscribers, use Settings, Subscribers Import instead.

Importing from Beehiiv

You need two things from your Beehiiv account, both found in Beehiiv under Settings, API:

  • your API key
  • your Publication ID, which starts with pub_

Then:

  1. Click New Content Import.
  2. Under Import from, choose Beehiiv.
  3. Paste your Beehiiv API Key and Beehiiv Publication ID.
  4. Click Start Import.

The import runs in the background, so you can leave the page. You are taken back to the Import History.

What comes across

For each Beehiiv post, Inkwave brings over:

  • the title and subtitle
  • the body of the post, converted so you can edit it in Inkwave
  • the images in the post, copied to Inkwave so they keep working even if you close your Beehiiv account
  • an email subject line, taken from the title, and preview text, taken from the post's preview text or subtitle

Beehiiv's own page header (the title block, author line and share buttons) is left out, because Inkwave adds its own. You become the author of every imported post.

If a post has paid-only content, the full version is imported.

Following progress

Import History lists every import with its Platform, Status, the Total number of posts found, how many were Imported, how many Failed, and the Date.

StatusWhat it means
PendingThe import is queued and about to start.
In progressPosts are being copied. The counts update as it goes.
CompletedEvery post has been tried. Check the Failed count for any that didn't come across.
FailedNone of the posts could be imported.

Imported posts appear in your Newsletters list, under All.

After importing

Imported posts are a starting point. Open one to check how it looks, then edit it like any other post. Nothing is emailed unless you publish and send it yourself.

Troubleshooting

The import stays on In progress for a long time: large archives take a while. If it never moves, check that your API key and Publication ID are right and that the key is still active in Beehiiv, then start a new import.

Some posts show under Failed: those posts couldn't be converted. The rest of the import is not affected. You can copy a failed post across by hand.

I imported twice and now have duplicates: each import copies every post again. It doesn't check for posts imported before. Delete the extra copies from your Newsletters list.

Some images point back to Beehiiv: if an image couldn't be copied, the post keeps its original Beehiiv link. Replace it in the editor if you plan to close your Beehiiv account.
