Guest authors

Credit writers who aren't on your team, manage their profiles, and see how their issues perform.

Team authors and guest authors

A post can credit two kinds of author:

  • Team authors: people who have joined your publication's team. They appear in the author picker on their own.
  • Guest authors: anyone else, such as a contributor or interviewee. You create a profile for each one.

Where to find them

Go to Newsletters, click Reports, then Authors. The tab has the guest author report and, below it, Manage guest authors.

Manage guest authors shows if your role can edit posts. You can also reach it from the author picker in the editor, through Manage authors or Manage guest authors.

Adding a guest author

In Manage guest authors, click New author:

  • Name: required.
  • Bio: a short description.
  • Link: a web address, such as their website.
  • Profile Picture: click to choose an image file. Use the remove button to clear it.

Click Save.

To change or remove someone, use the menu beside their name and pick Edit or Delete. Deleting a guest author also takes them off every post they were credited on, including published ones. It can't be undone.

Crediting authors on a post

On one post: in the editor, click Add Author under the subtitle. Choose Add author for your team, or Add guest author, then tick the names. Changes are saved straight away.

On several posts at once:

  1. On Newsletters, click Posts.
  2. Tick the posts you want.
  3. Click Bulk actions and choose Add and remove authors.
  4. Pick one or more authors, from your team or your guests, and click Add authors.

This adds authors but doesn't remove any. To take an author off a post, untick them in that post's editor.

If your email settings use Use Newsletter's Author Name as Sender Name, the email is sent from the post's author. With several authors it shows the first one, followed by how many more, for example "Sam +1".

The report

The Guest authors report shows how issues credited to each guest author performed in the date range you pick:

ColumnWhat it shows
AuthorThe guest author.
IssuesHow many of their issues were sent.
DeliveredEmails delivered for those issues.
Open rateUnique opens out of delivered.
vs avgTheir open rate minus your publication's average open rate for the same range, in percentage points.
CTRClick-through rate.
CTORClick-to-open rate: how many openers clicked.

A co-written issue counts toward every author on it, so the rows overlap. Don't add them up to get a total.

Troubleshooting

"No issues credited a guest author in this range.": none of the issues sent in that range had a guest author. Try a longer range.

"Avatar upload failed" or "Please select an image file": profile pictures must be image files. Try again with a different image.

Someone on my team isn't in the author picker: only people who have accepted their invitation to your team are listed.

Add and remove authors didn't remove anyone: it only adds. Remove authors from each post in the editor.
